Journey Beyond

This sculpture is inspired by the living history of the horseshoe crab, which is an ancient creature that lives among us to this day. It was created using a slip-casting technique where first a plaster mold is created from a clay model of the crab. Once the mold was dry, slip was added into the mold cavity to create the piece. Many identical pieces were cast from the reusable molds. The crabs were sanded, primed, and painted in order to obtain a glossy sheen as if they had just emerged from the ocean. This sculpture is catalogued in the University of Notre Dame Museum of Biodiversity.
