Motus - Smart Bike

Motus is a prototype smart bike that incorporates turn signaling, brake lights, and blind-spot detection onto a standard bike, increasing safety for cyclists and motorists alike. This bike utilizes Particle Photons to monitor a sensor data, to receive input from the cyclist, and to activate lights to signal turning or braking.

Turn Signaling System

Below is a circuit diagram for the turn signaling system. Joystick input is read by the Particle Photon which sends signal to a NeoPixel strip. Similarly, a hall effect sensor is mounted on the brake handle to detect braking. A position sensor mounted on the bike determines when the bike has stopped turning to automatically cancel the turn signal. The UV light sensor automatically detects nighttime and low-light conditions to turn on a front-facing headlight and engage a night-time configuration on the rear lights.

Blind-spot detection system

Below is a circuit diagram for the blind-spot detection system. Three IR sensors are mounted in an array behind the cyclist to monitor their blind-spots. Sensor input from this array is collected by a Particle Photon. The IR sensor array senses vehicles, pedestrians, and other cyclists near the bike and notifies the cyclist of the proximity and direction using a light ring on the center of the handlebars. As an object gets closer to the sensors, the lights become brighter before blinking when an object is critically close.
